Have a Superhero Secret Identity with The Staples 15 Sheet Cross Cut Shredder Pros: cross cut reasonably priced home office modelCons: can get overheatedThe Bottom Line: This is a good all around machine for light to moderate use in your home or home office. Staples 15 sheet cross cut Shredder A vital tool for protecting your identity these days………………………….: I recently had a friend get her identity stolen with several credit cards taken out in her name. As I was going through all my receipts for tax time I thought that I should probably be shredding the ones I don’t need rather than throwing them in the recycling bin in order to protect my own identity. It sounds a bit like Superman but identity theft is at an all time high right now and it is important to buy a good shredder to protect yourself. Now that my preaching is complete let me tell you about what I decided to get for my protection. I looked at several models in all different price ranges and decided on the Staples 15 sheet cross cutting shredder. I liked the fact that you could put several sheets in the shredder at one time and that it not only cut them one way but also made a second cut for extra added protection. This shredder is strong enough to cross cut through credit cards compact discs and DVD’s. It goes right through any staples in the papers being shredded. It seemed like the right choice for me for my needs. Out of the box……………………………………………………………. This shredder is packaged nicely and is easy to assemble. The shredding componet of the whole unit is heavy but fits easily over the top of the unit and locks into place. The 8 ½ gallon bin pulls out easily from the unit for emptying. After snapping the top in place you can turn it on and shred! There is a master power switch in back and an everyday power switch on top with the choice of “off” “auto” or “rev”. I keep mine in the auto position so that I can stick receipts in there through out the day. It will automatically turn on when the receipt goes in and shut off after shredding it. With younger children it might not be a good idea to leave it in this position. I would worry about fingers! The “rev” or reverse position is nice if there is a thick chunk of paper stuck in it because it will go backwards and push the paper back out. A little touch and go at first…………………………………………………………. The shredder was tested with fifteen sheets in the factory according to the salesman but I rarely go over five or six sheets when shredding because I am afraid it will get stuck or overheated. This shredder is designed for up to 100 uses a day and does get overheated if you start pushing it. On the first day that I brought it home I put six sheets through after using it for ten minutes straight and the shredder lit up and shut down. In fact it also took out half of the power in my house! I called the electrician in and he replaced the breaker but the shredder did not come back on. I figured I had overheated it so I called the store and they said to bring it in. Staples apologized profusely and replaced the shredder. They were willing to let me trade it for a different brand as well. I asked them which one to get and they said that this was still the best shredder to get in that price range. They explained that sometimes in transit they get damaged and that the company that produced it has been making shredders for a long time. They really thought it was a fluke. I trusted their expertise on this and got the same shredder. I have been using it happily ever since but still keep to the five or six sheet limit based on my experience. Some of the other stats…………………………………………………………. This shredder shreds paper into 3/16 inch by 1 1/8 inch little pieces! It is truly impossible to read anything left on the paper scraps so it is doing the job nicely. According to the manufacturer it can shred up to 6.6 feet per minute but if you have a lot of shredding to do I would keep a shredding box next to the shredder and do it in pieces each day to avoid overheating. The opening of the shredder feed is a spacious nine inches so it is easy to get the paper in without having to be precise. There are LED indicators to indicate if the power is on if the unit is overheated and when the bin is full. When the bin is full the unit will not operate. Maintenance is simple…………………………………………………………. Maintenance really is easy with Staples Shredder Lubricant Sheets. Instead of having to deal with oils etc to keep the blades working properly just feed one of these nifty sheets through the shredder every four to six weeks. They come in packs of fifteen and put the exact amount of lubrication on the entire blades without you having to try and figure out what to do. Easy is better in my book and these are definitely easy. Side note: I don’t shred everything and this is important. I strongly believe in recycling and shredded paper can not easily be recycled because the fibers have been cut and shortened. It ends up being thrown away at most recycling plants. I have found however that there is an environmentally friendly way to get rid of shredded paper and that is in my lawn bin here. I bag it up in biodegradable paper bags and put it in with my grass clippings. Check with your local waste people to determine the best way to get rid of your shredded paper because it is probably different regionally. Lastly - The overall size of the unit is 16 inches high 23 inches deep and 12 1/8 inches wide. This shredder comes with a ten year manufacturer’s limited warranty and the cutters have a one year manufacturer’s limited warranty. Despite my rocky start with this product I am happy with the use of it over time and the people at Staples were very nice to work with. It shreds nicely and I recommend it in the fight to protect our identities from others wanting to steal them.
